Who Would Jesus Torture?

Something is really wrong with this.

A study out today says that “The more often Americans go to church, the more likely they are to support the torture of suspected terrorists, according to a new survey.” Source: CNN.com

Every now and again something comes out that causes me to shake my head and wonder “What are they thinking?” This story is one of those times. Do evangelical Christians really think that torture is consistent with their faith? Or is it just that evangelical Christians are more likely to align with a political group that thinks that the end justifies the means regardless of the morality of the means?

The psalmist says:

I hold back my feet from every evil way, in order to keep your word. – Psalm 119:101 ESV

Torture is wrong regardless of the reason.

WWJE?

This post is probably going to get me in trouble.

That being said, I’m going to do it anyway. I was scanning the news this morning and saw an article on MSNBC’s website that stated that a California beauty pageant outfit paid for Miss California to have breast implants.

A little background may explain why I’m commenting on this. Miss California, Carrie Prejean caused quite a ruckus at the Miss USA competition when she was asked how she felt about gay marriage. To her credit she gave her opinion and not some politically correct gobbledygook.

Her opinion was that marriage should be between a man and a woman. It also later came out that Miss Prejean’s opinion was formed due to her Christian faith. When later interviewed about the flap this has caused Miss Prejean said “It’s not about being politically correct; for me, it was being biblically correct,”. So far so good.

My question is one of WWJE? or What Would Jesus Enhance? For a long time we’ve been taught not to objectify women (or even men for that matter) based on their appearance. The Apostle Peter even says:

“ Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. 1 Peter 3:3-4 ESV

Peter was likely speaking about the Greco-Roman practice of women adorning themselves with ostentatious clothing, jewelry and hairstyles. A commentator on this passage in the ESV Study Bible puts it this way:

“Peter warns against both an inordinate preoccupation with personal appearance and material excess in such matters.”

Is a boob job consistent with being “biblically correct”? Would the thousands of dollars spent on breast implants be better spent on other things? Given that access to even basic medical care is a luxury for many in the world are we really bearing a good Christian witness by a silicon enhanced chest?

Now a point of clarification. I have no problem with breast implants as a part of reconstructive surgery as in the case of women who’ve had a mastectomy after breast cancer. You can put your pink ribbon adorned baseball bats away now.

What do you think?

Jesus Paid It All, But For Who?

The Dallas Morning News has a great piece on Maury Davis, convicted murderer turned mega-church pastor. But this story brings up some interesting questions. Can someone who committed a heinous crime really be saved? At what point has he paid his debt to society?

“I did something heinous, not just awful,” says Davis, who slit the throat of 54-year-old Jo Ella Liles in broad daylight in a peaceful middle-class Irving neighborhood in 1975. “Unless you go to a Charles Manson level, it’s out there.” Source: Dallas Morning News

Just as interesting as the article itself is the comments about the article on the DMN website, scroll below the linked article to see them. You can see there are a lot of strong emotions about this.

I’ll offer my two cents for what they are worth. Jesus’ atonement for our sins even includes those of Maury Davis, Tex Watson, etc. God sees all sins for what they really are, sin. When He paid the price for sin, he really paid it all.

Thoughts On Easter

I just finished watching one of my favorite movies. It’s kind of become a tradition at my house to watch “The Miracle Maker” the night before Easter. I never cease to get a little teary eyed while watching and thinking about what Easter means. For once I’m at a loss for words on this. I’ll let the movie speak for itself.

If you don’t have a DVD of this movie you can watch it for free on Hulu.com.

Shalom in Him who is our ultimate Peace,

I Too Am An American

I too am an American
though I don’t drive an oversized SUV
and I really don’t care for Toby Keith.

There aren’t flags flying on my house
no magnetic yellow ribbons
nor patriotic bumper stickers on my car.

What are the things that make you an American
is it voting for the right candidate
or declaring belief in the right things?

I think the things that make you American
are values we can all agree on
things that unite not divide.

Things like freedom
the right to self determination
to voice our opinions.

In spite of all the rhetoric, vitriol and angry words
there is more that unites us than divides us
and that is what makes me an American.

Shalom,

Scott D
